About Blueprint MCAT

Blueprint, formerly called Next Step, is a test prep company which offers resources to help students prepare and see success with the MCAT. A few of their core values are innovation (always finding new ways to improve students’ learning experience), transparency (honest and open communication with students) and owning the result (make commitments and see them through to successful outcomes).

The team at Blueprint is comprised of three different departments, a Pre-Med Advisory Council, MCAT Advisors, and MCAT tutors. The Pre-Med Advisory Council works to provide mentorship for students as they begin and work their way through the pre-med journey. Blueprint’s MCAT Advisors are available to help students figure out which learning options are the best fit for them. Finally, the tutors, all of which have received extensive training to help students of all skill levels and learning styles, are there to coach students through the prep and get them ready for test day.

What Blueprint Offers

Online Course

Blueprint’s MCAT Course delivers self-studying MCAT content through a series of 160 Learning Modules, which feature video lessons, quizzes, reasoning skills and passages that are designed to help students learn the content rather than simply memorize it.

With the online course option, students can take advantage of Blueprint’s 100% fully customizable study planner tool. Once you input your target MCAT date and your study preferences, the planner will create a schedule specifically for you. Additionally, if changes come up in your daily routine, you can easily add these into your plan and the tool will adjust your study schedule accordingly.

Students take a pre-module assessment before beginning each module, which helps to further personalize the course so that students know where to spend the most time and do not waste time on content that they already know. The videos are designed to be engaging, with animations and illustrations to help keep students interested and motivated. Students are able to watch videos in a mobile-friendly format as well, without ever having to download an app.

In addition to the video lessons, the online course provides substantial practice so students can test their knowledge, which includes over 10,000 practice questions, over 150 passages and more than 4,000 questions and passages in the Qbank. Purchasing the online course also gives students the advantage of being able to work with 6 content books, all official AAMC online resources, and 15 full-length MCAT exams.

Blueprint’s advanced analytics visually present students with the data on their performance so they can easily see which subject areas and question types they need the most help with.

Despite the fact that Blueprint’s course is not live, students who have questions or who need extra help can access Blueprint’s expert MCAT instructors for live “office hours” 5 days a week.

Tutoring

Blueprint’s MCAT tutoring is an ideal option for students who prefer to learn through face-to-face instruction rather than through self-learning video content. Similar to the online course, Blueprint’s tutoring is completely personalized to each student’s specific needs. If students come to the sessions with test prep material that they have already been using or are comfortable with, Blueprint’s tutors will work to incorporate that material into their study plan. Generally, students meet with their tutors once a week or biweekly, and will use this time to go over homework questions, start learning new topics, or review areas of weakness.

Blueprint offers three different tutoring plans (16-hour “Core”, 24-hour “Comprehensive”, and 40-hour “Intensive”) that students can choose from based on how many hours of tutoring they want or need. All three plans include the following:

  • Personalized study plan created by your tutor
  • Access to Blueprint’s MCAT online course
  • Access to 1 diagnostic pre-test and 10 full-length exams
  • All AAMC online resources
  • Qbank with 4,000 questions

Practice Exams

For students that are just looking to get some extra exam practice in before test day, Blueprint also offers a variety of practice exam bundles, all of which include 6 months of access, 5 attempts per test, the study planner resource as well as performance analytics on your results. Blueprint’s practice exams are created to resemble the AAMC exam as closely as possible to ensure that students are receiving practice that is similar to what they will see on test day. Blueprint offers practice exams in 4 exam, 6 exam and 10 exam bundles.

Question Bank

The last option that Blueprint provides is sole access to the MCAT QBank, which has 4000 questions covering all 4 areas of the MCAT and follows the AAMC format. With the Qbank, students can personalize their practice so that they work on the topics that they need the most help with. Each question comes with detailed answers and explanations so students can learn where they went wrong and how to not make the same mistake twice.

Pricing

Online Course

Blueprint offers three different options for online courses depending on how long you want access to the materials for. The 6 Month Plan is $333/month, with a discounted total of $1799. The 12 Month Plan, which is the most popular, is $278/month, with a discounted total of $2199. The longest plan that Blueprint offers is the 18 Month Plan, which is the best value at $225/month with a discounted $1999 total. All three plans come with a score increase guarantee. Tutoring

Blueprint’s 16-hour “Core” package starts at $3599, and must be completed over a minimum of 1 month. The 24-hour “Comprehensive” package starts at $4499, and must be completed over 2-3 months. Finally, the 40-hour “Intensive” package starts at $6499 and must be completed over 3-6 months. Monthly payment options are available for all three plans. Practice Exams

The 4 exam bundle, priced at $159, includes access to 3 full-length exams, not counting the 1 free full-length exam that you get access to when you create your free account. The 6 exam bundle is priced at $209 and includes access to 5 full-length exams in addition to the 1 free. The 10 exam bundle can either be purchased with or without the full MCAT QBank (with the bank for $319) and gives students access to 9 full-length exams in addition to the free exam when you sign up.

    Initially, I attempted to self-study for the MCAT but didn't achieve a satisfactory score on my first try. I struggled with retaining the extensive amount of material and was unsure of how to organize my study schedule. Subsequently, I discovered Blueprint and opted for their 6-month online course while preparing for the MCAT the second time. The Blueprint online course provides a well-structured curriculum, along with a customizable calendar to organize your study schedule for MCAT preparation and daily review for each subject. I particularly appreciated their video modules, which presented concepts in a captivating and informative manner. The practice questions, tests, and explanations provided by Blueprint helped me identify my areas of weaknesses, learn from my mistakes, and make notable improvements.     • What medical school application advice do you have for prospective students?: The medical school application is a year-long process and can be very overwhelming. I would recommend to start working on the application early. The AMCAS application opens in early May, and you will be able to submit your primary application as early as May 30th. Getting a head start on your personal statement can be helpful as it would give you more time to review it and have it checked by others, ensuring you have a well-edited essay that shows your story. In addition to MCAT and GPA, your primary/secondary essays and interviews play an important role in the application process. I would definitely recommend having someone to help read through and edit your essays and recommend doing multiple mock interviews before your interview to help you practice. I would like to emphasize that clinical experiences are extremely important. However, it is equally important to prioritize your well-being during this stressful and long cycle. Good luck to those applying to medical schools in the upcoming cycles.

    I utilized the Online Self-paced course for my studying and found it to be quite useful. I had daily modules and practice questions, along with intermittent practice exams that tracked my progress and showed which topics I could use more work in. My only complaint about this program is that occasionally I was distracted during the video modules by the person presenting the information in the video. Some were monotone, and some were so enthusiastic that it took away from actually learning the maternal because it was so distracting. In addition, sometimes the practice questions were over material that had not yet been discussed, and it became frustrating when I got those questions wrong. Overall, I was happy with this program. It cost me $1900 for the program, and I ended up extending it another month for I believe $200. Would recommend to my friends if they are able to afford that cost, otherwise YouTube videos, free practice exams and textbooks from undergrad are an excellent resource.

    • What medical school application advice do you have for prospective students?: Start writing your essays early, both personal statement and secondary essays. Once you submit your primary app, the secondary apps will flood into your email. If you applied to over 30 schools as I did, the essays will become overwhelming and it will make it difficult to submit within 2 weeks of receiving it, which is the recommended time frame to submit a secondary app. Start pre-writing essays now, then just touch up the details for each specific program.

    I utilized the free resources and AAMC practice tests. I think it is a great diagnostic tool to start out with but if you want real results you got to buy the course. Overall I think this program is a great study tool!

    I did samples of the MCAT prep course and fully utilized the MCAT Prep exams, which were great. The BluePrint Exams are a great preparation before using the AAMC Full Length exams. My actual MCAT score was very close to my practice exams score. The explanations of the answers were also easy to understand and gave full breakdowns of the right and wrong answers which helped a lot. I always recommend BluePrint exams to PreMeds looking for practice exams to assess their readiness to take the MCAT.

Get your recommendations, order transcripts do every thing you can for the application well before the opening of the submission cycle, so that all you have to do is hit submit, come submission day.     While I did not take the online course, I did use the Blueprint practice exams. There were several exams I took from various platforms and I can say that Blueprint was the most consistent and accurate with their scoring. Some other companies gradually make the exams more difficult, so I was scoring far below what I did on the actual MCAT. However, my Blueprint exam scores were very close to my real score. These exams were a vital part of my study progress and allowed me to regain confidence. I would definitely recommend Blueprint for any MCAT study resources.

    These practice tests were one of the most important parts of my MCAT studying. The questions were very representative of the AAMC style questions and enabled me to feel very prepared for test day. I felt as though the explanations to the questions were well thought out and helpful. I took 1 test a week as I wrapped up my studying and neared my testing date and was able to become comfortable with the length and pace of the test. Best of luck to everyone studying!

    I thought that this MCAT Prep material was really helpful in terms of the difficulty of the practice questions that they have developed. As I took their practice exams I watched my score increase week by week. I learned later on that the best way for me to prepare for the MCAT was to do as many practice questions as possible instead of content review. Would definitely recommend!

    Great amount of material, especially the full lengths and other practice questions. The video modules explain things well and give good ways to remember things. The structure of the schedule is easily adjustable with a lot of content without being too overwhelming, though it is slightly much at times. Would recommend!

    Blueprint really has a nice schedule format that includes a step-by-step MCAT STUDY Program that accommodates a busy schedule. The content videos are really enjoyable to watch and didn't feel forceful. Practice review questions at the end of the videos that gave "MCAT question" vibes. The practice questions hammered on a complete understanding of foundational information. This helps master the basics which expedite identifying the correct answer quickly. The full-length exams are "down to the tee" what the real MCAT looks like helping with "Encoding Specificity". Also, their regular "online course" is cheaper at the least comparable to that of the other big PREP companies. And that from someone who is considered "low income"

I think if you are getting 2 or more, 505⪰ scores on FL's practices you'll get a matriculating score. Also, make sure you take breaks as needed. The process can seem daunting. Having a life outside MCAT studying helps mentally and physically. Keeps the cortisol levels at baseline levels.

    I utilized books, and question banks from Blue Print when they were still under the name Next Step. In particular, I highly recommend their books on CARS. Multiple strategies were presented with ample opportunities to practice. Personally, I found the Blue Print test to be more challenging than AMCAS, so when I took the official exam I was very comfortable and prepared leading to a 98th percentile score in CARS.

    • What medical school application advice do you have for prospective students?: Applying to medical school is expensive. Even though I had been eligible for AMCAS fee assistance program I needed a second job for over a year to save money for the remaining myriad expenses (DO primary and secondary application fees, transcripts, suit, travel for interviews/second looks, etc)--the money went very fast, so start saving as early as you can. You will also need to save some money for deposits to hold your seat which can be as high as $2500, deposits for where you will live, and lay out funds for moving, which will not be covered by your financial aid. Being able to apply to medical school is still favored towards people who come from privilege and money, it is difficult if on top of everything else (getting the grades, writing the essays, letters of recommendation, volunteering) you also have to struggle financially just to get the opportunity to apply. Unfortunately, however that is the reality. It is possible to apply even if you don't have a lot of funds, but be as strategic about it as possible. Apply for fee waivers, save as much as you can, and make sure you put together the best possible application the first time around to minimize risk of having to apply and spend all that money again.

    Good course with good explanations. Best practice exams on the market. Though of course they may have a few confusing questions every now and then, overall the exam scores were highly consistent and had excellent predictive power when it came to my real score. I would never have gotten the score that I achieved without using their exam materials in particular.

    I believe that Next Step provided some of the most similar questions compared to the actual MCAT and AAMC practice exams. Both the user interface and challenge-level of the questions were accurate to the actual exam and helped me prepare. Additionally, support staff were very easy to contact when I had trouble accessing online materials.

    I took the course with one of their tutors, who was a great resource. We met weekly to go over test-taking skills, including time management during the exam. My tutor even talked me through how to handle test anxiety, a big barrier for me. The online calendar helped me to stay on track with material and when to take practice exams. The exams were challenging, but very helpful as they mimicked the actual test.

    • What medical school application advice do you have for prospective students?: It is easy to get overwhelmed looking ahead, but take steps day by day. It's much easier to set small daily goals to reach the end. Always make sure you are making time to take care of yourself. Remember that you are not defined by numbers or even whether you are invited for an interview or accepted. This was something that was difficult for me as a re-applicant, but taking more time to improve my application (including my MCAT score) was worth it.

    Blueprint was the single most important MCAT prep tool I used to study. I found that the full-length practice tests were the closest to the AAMC practice tests and the real deal. My scores improved significantly over time as I took and reviewed these practice tests. Highly recommended.

    I listened to the MCAT podcast which went through the blueprint practice test. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the podcast as I rode to the library to study for 12hours. Listening to the doctor on the podcast trying to answer the questions made me feel more confident in my knowledge for the material. Would definitely recommend the MCAT podcast.

If your practice tests are not where you want to be, then that is okay. Continue to study and do practice questions until you are confident. The MCAT is a mental exam, you know the material, just have to build your endurance and confidence. In terms of application put you on that paper, by capturing the ADCOMS attention through your application, they are going to want to know more and invite you for an interview. BE YOURSELF! BE HONEST! BE TRUTHFUL! YOU CAN DO IT!

    I heard of Blueprint from a YouTuber while I was scrolling looking for MCAT study tools. I stumbled upon and decided to give one of their practice exams a try. It resembled the AAMC exams so much I decided to take 2 more! Some websites had exams that just did not resemble the actual exam (and being someone who was taking the MCAT for the second time, I already had experience on what the actual exam was like). I ended up taking 3 practice exams total and scored the exact number I received on one of my practice tests! All of my practice exams were within a few points of each other and I was glad with my score. I find that the more tests I took the less my score would fluctuate as I got accustomed to how to take the exam. Overall, a GREAT resource to use!

    Blueprint was a great prep tool for me because it offered videos to help me remember content. However, the best part of blueprint was their flashcards and practice tests. I took all 10 practice tests as well as the diagnostic test and they were a lot harder than the MCAT. I ended up scoring 10 points higher than my scores on the practice tests. Blueprint has great office hours as well if you don't understand something you can always go to office hours. I recommend using the question bank as well as it really helped with studying. Questions are the most important to work on.

    I signed up for the online live course and completed the scheduled tutoring sessions as well as did many of the practice test they offer. I found the program fit best to how I wanted to study. The practice test are great as well if you just purchase those. The live office hours were SUPER helpful (most of the time), and I wished I had used those more in the beginning of my prep. I am a non traditional student and had taken many of my pre-req's over 6 years prior and was attempting to take the mcat prior to Ochem and biochem. I felt it was great for refresh. The books I got with the program were ok, I used my Kaplan ones more.

Experience is going to matter more in the end. As far as studying goes- find what program/method works best for you. Don't be afraid to try something new.

    The blueprint course is great for people that need a self-paced, self-directed, self-disciplined course. They provide great optional resources, including tutors and classes, but they do not need to be completed in order to utilize the course well. They give modules for any subject anticipated on the MCAT, and allow you to create a super helpful studying plan. Their tests are great and really prepared me well for the actual test. My score from the diagnostic to the actual test went up 20+ points, meaning that they really do prepare you well for success.

    I found blue print practice exams to be a a great supplemental resource to my MCAT studies. When I was studying I would use a blueprint practice exam once per week to help me get an idea of how I was progressing. While I did find the questions harder than the real thing, I found this to be a good resource as the explanations and graphs on the questions I got wrong were very well done. Overall I felt like Blueprint did a great job training me to take an MCAT style exam and got me comfortable and familiar with the question styles. While everyone does their study style differently, I found that this worked great for me as a resource and I would recommend it to others.

    • What medical school application advice do you have for prospective students?: One of the easiest things you can do to make a great application is to volunteer. Your GPA and MCAT scores need to be good to be looked at but volunteering can really set you apart on an application. Finding a place that you can really make a difference in and then dedicating yourself to it will give you tons of interesting stories that will help you stand out on interviews. In my opinion this factor is much more important than research and will definitely set you apart on application day. As for the interviews, be yourself and remember that you were chosen because they already think you look good on paper. Interviews are more of a way for schools to get a feel for your personality. Don't try to be someone else when talking with them, you were chosen already because of your unique character. Believe in yourself!

    Originally, I privately studied for the MCAT for two attempts and found that I stagnated myself in the amount of information I was retaining, which was reflected in my first scores. After thorough research, I found that Blueprint offered the most in-depth resources and best one-on-one learning environment for the most reasonable price. I took the online course for 6 months, and during that time used the calendar feature to plan out each subject to review and study, and participated in the tutoring sessions (primarily CARS, psychology, and biochemistry). I found that I retained more information and could find and correct where I was going wrong in my test taking skills, and felt more confident in my passage review and answer choices. Overall, the course not only helped solidify the major areas of information from each subject that I needed to know, my score also improved by 13 points, and I was accepted into my top medical school choice. I couldn't be happier with my decision to use Blueprint, and I recommend it to all my peers looking for MCAT study resources. You can't go wrong with using Blueprint!

    Blue Print practice exams were my go to choice of practice when studying for the MCAT. Their exams were very close to the real MCAT exam in that it was very similar to the AAMC material. Furthermore, the practice exams were in the same computer based format(on the computer with passage on the left side of screen and questions on the right side) which made the real MCAT feel just like a practice exam.

    I used blueprint for half of my practice FL's for MCAT - they were very challenging and allowed me to think critically and really taught me how to use the passage information to answer passages based questions. They were very predictive for the AAMC practice FL's and I would highly recommend anyone prepping for MCAT to use their practice exams and test banks.

    This course is very well laid out with great explanations. I wish I would have found it earlier. I used another prep company and did not feel well prepared despite finishing the entire course. This company allows you to customize your study schedule and has realistic practice questions/exams. I highly recommend them!

    Blueprint offers everything that one would need to not only prepare for the MCAT, but also to prepare for applying to medical school. The online prep courses are very easy to navigate and come with tons of questions and practice exams. I really appreciated how question banks were organized into very specific categories, so I could easily target questions that I struggled with the most. The tutors at Blueprint are prompt, professional, and will work around your schedule if you choose to work with them. As an added bonus, after MCAT prep, Blueprint can assist with pieces of your medical school applications all the way up to the interview! I would definitely recommend this service to prepare for the MCAT.

    • What medical school application advice do you have for prospective students?: The medical school application process takes a lot of patience and self control. The process starts as early as June/July and can run all the way until June of the following year. It can get very easy to get complacent and stop double-checking essays before submitting them. It is tempting to constantly email medical schools to ask them where they are in the process or even updates to your current application. The process is not black and white, and I believe you can annoy a school enough to not grant you a secondary application or an interview. Take everything at a slow pace. The earlier you get in your applications the better; however, this should not take away from a thorough and well-edited essay.

    I really like the format of the website. The content is very similar to the actual MCAT. They also host free zoom lectures in regards to the MCAT to teach you concepts like Metabolism & Circuits/Batteries. It was very helpful and the professors seem to really care about the people in the zoom as well. They also went to medical school and took the MCAT themselves so you know it's legit. They have a lot of free resources and free practice exams (1 diagnostic + 2 full length/half length). Their explanations also make sense and their answers are clearly explained. Correct answers are also explained as well.

    • What medical school application advice do you have for prospective students?: I suggest to focus on content gaps that you may have in regard to the MCAT. Practice practice practice. Time your tests to be like actual test day so you build up the stamina and endurance. Look up the average MCAT scores that your schools accept and try to achieve that. Be honest and raw in your personal statement. Try to write something that isn't on your application and something that one may find interesting about you. Only write extracurriculars/activities that are meaningful. Med schools like consistency and continued interest so having 2-3 large activities is better than 14 small ones. Look to Reddit for advice (that suit you) and SDN for encouragement but NEVER EVER use these forums for comparisons. Good Luck!

    I bought the Blueprint practice exams as my only source of practice exams and was not disappointed. Definitely very close to AAMC style questions and the descriptions of why answers were right/wrong were clear and easy to understand. You can even take the exams section at a time which helped me focus on sections I struggled in more. Blueprint was a great resource and would use them again if I had to do it all over again

    Blueprint (originally called Next Step) is one of the best resources and prep courses for the MCAT. First, it highly resembles the actual MCAT exam, allowing you to get a more accurate feel to what the exam will actually be like. Second, their exams offer a broad range of topics you will come across not only on exam day but also during the course of your content and practice towards the MCAT. Third, it allows you to take the exam full length and by section, which allows you to strengthen sections and topics that might be areas of weakness. Lastly, and most importantly, reviewing exams and the content surrounding the exam topics is critical and Blueprint's exams and resources offer great explanations. They offer explanations not just for the right answer but also for the wrong answers. These explanations is what makes a world of a difference for several reasons: 1) It allows you to learn how to see trends the test-makers like to make. 2) Learn content better from an applied point of view. If there's one resource outside the AAMC material that's a must to use, it's definitely Blueprint.

    • What medical school application advice do you have for prospective students?: It's very important to focus on the MCAT as it is definitely the foot in the door for medical school interviews. Dedicate the time and importance to this exam as it is no joke. Additionally, apply when you're ready and when you have the strongest advantage. This means applying when you can apply as early as possible, with a strong MCAT/GPA scores, and are able to fill out all 15 experiences under the AMCAS work/activities section. The last advice I can give all students is make sure to prioritize your well-being both mentally and physically. This process of applying is long, stressful, and difficult. But if you know this in advance and stay positive, the endurance will be well worth it when you finally get that acceptance letter into medical school. Good luck, keep your head up, and keep moving forward!
