About Magoosh MCAT

When creating its MCAT prep, Magoosh’s main goals were to make it both accessible and effective for the best possible value. Magoosh ensures that the MCAT questions and material they provide is always the most updated, and they strongly believe that an emphasis on quality rather than quantity is the greatest way to see success.

While anyone can sign up for Magoosh’s test prep services, they suggest that the individuals who will benefit from them the most likely fall into one or more of the following categories: 1) self-studier, meaning you like to study at your own pace and on your own schedule, 2) video learner, meaning you learn well visually, and 3) busy professional, meaning you may not have much time to study.

What’s Offered

Once you sign up for Magoosh’s MCAT prep, you will then have access to over 380 content review videos, more than 700 practice questions, practice tests and custom study schedules. The content review videos are offered for all subjects that are tested on the MCAT, however there is a slight focus on high-yield topics. All videos are available to watch from any device, such as a phone, tablet or computer. For each of the several hundred practice questions, Magoosh provides detailed explanations so students can go back to see where they went wrong and ensure they don’t make the same mistakes twice. When it comes to practice tests, students have the option to choose between full-length, shortened, or individually sectioned tests. Finally, Magoosh offers study plans for 1, 2, 3 and 6 month time periods, so students can choose a plan that works for them depending on when they are scheduled to take the exam.

Pricing

There are two different pricing options that Magoosh offers, each varying in length of access and level of comprehensiveness depending on your studying needs. For students who want a short-term study option, the 1 month premium, which starts at $379 for one month of access, is recommended. For students looking for a longer-term prep plan, the 12 month premium, priced at $399 for 12 months of access, is most likely a better option. For both options, you are only required to pay once and will then have access to your chosen product for the duration of the plan. Both options give you access to the same set of materials and video resources; the only differentiator between them is the period of time that you have access to them.

Free Materials

In addition to its video content, practice questions and tests, which can only be accessed with a membership, Magoosh also offers some free study materials for students to take advantage of as they prepare for the MCAT. They offer free flashcards, which can be used either online or via the Magoosh app for iPhone/Android. Additionally, Magoosh has a blog on its website that is entirely related to MCAT questions, information, and tips for students to keep up to date with.

    The videos and explanations were very clear and detailed. The materials were well explained and thought out. Explanations were detailed but not overly detailed to the point where it was hard to understand. The scheduling breakdown was so helpful for pacing and making sure I was covering everything. The practice questions were very helpful and definitely helped me with my score. This is definitely a course that is for a self-starter and someone who can make their own schedule. If you need a more structured study plan this may not work for you!

    The videos were straight to the point and easy to move through! It was very helpful to have the must knows explicitly stated. I enjoyed the different study plans one was able to choose from based on how far out your test date was. Good practice questions and explanations. This course along with the Uworld question bank boosted my psychology/sociology and biology/biochem sections from the 25% percentile to the 83-85% in less than 2 months.

Listening to my peers everyday talk about all of the great things they were doing for experience and applying to 15+ schools caused a lot of anxiety in my life. I knew what I wanted and what would work best for myself. I focused on the experiences I truly enjoyed like being a CNA rather than just working to "check the boxes". I only completed one secondary application, got the interview, and was accepted! Also...don't lose sleep over the CASPER test. I scored in the 25% percentile somehow and it was never brought up.

    I liked that this program was VERY affordable and went over all the topics discussed on the MCAT outline of topics. Their practice questions were challenging and similar in difficulty to those on the actual MCAT, and their explanations were very helpful in helping to understand when I got a question wrong. The topics weren't overly in-depth like those of other test prep companies and served good tool for me to gauge whether or not I needed to consult additional resources to explore a topic in greater depth. I also utilized their email and chat tutoring/topic/question help regularly whenever I didn't understand something and was always able to get a detailed response within usually 24 hours (except for holidays).

    • What medical school application advice do you have for prospective students?: Start working on your personal statement early. I worked on mine over a two-year span, used my university's writing center, family, and friends to help sculpt multiple drafts, and added to it as I gained more experience. It was pretty much ready by the time I had to submit my application with almost no additional work. Also, really take time to reflect on any experiences and activities that brought you to your decision to go into medicine. Your reflectional journey is your story, and that's what they want to hear.

    What I liked about this review course is that it goes over concepts that are difficult for everyone to master, but doesn't go into the depth that the regular prep courses do. I went through the prep courses and they are very in depth and unnecessary in some parts. There are just certain things I want to brush up on from time to time, like the effects of the different types of enzyme inhibitors on Km and Vmax. So it's great for that, and the practice passages are pretty nice too since they are a bit harder than ones I've seen. This definitely shouldn't be your only source of review though. But overall this prep course is great as a course to understand the majority of the material seen on the MCAT. The strategies are helpful, and for students preparing in advance. It will help you outline your strengths, weaknesses, and study plan for the future.

    I used Magoosh the second time I took the MCAT. Both times that I took the MCAT I was working 7 days a week at multiple jobs. While I struggled to create a plan that worked with my busy schedule, Magoosh had resources available to not only design a study plan, but make things easy to stick to it. The apps and tools on the website allowed me to make the best use of my time in between jobs and sleep. I was able to increase my MCAT score by 13 points, a feat that I don't think I would have been able to accomplish with such a busy schedule without Magoosh.

    • What medical school application advice do you have for prospective students?: Start preparing early and make the most out of your time. There is a lot of information you need to gather for the application process, and the process has busy and slow seasons. Start your primary as early as the fall before, especially the personal statement, which will probably have multiple iterations. Once May comes around, you should have everything ready to go and just press send. after that, you are sitting around waiting for secondaries, then interviews, then decisions. Before secondaries, look up topics and start brainstorming examples for commonly used secondary questions. After secondaries and before interviews, start prepping for the interviews. There is plenty you can do to increase your chances at being accepted while you wait on results.

    I used Magoosh Test Prep in preparation for my upcoming entrance exam. It was very user friendly with daily assignments and to-do lists. The practice problems were extremely similar to the ones seen on the actual exam. I recommend this course prep to anyone preparing for a Medical School entrance exam.

    • What medical school application advice do you have for prospective students?: Apply to a handful of schools. Some easy medium and reach schools, a nice variety. Make sure you tour and research the schools before you invest your time and money in applying to these places.

    Magoosh is a great tool if you are self-reliant and an independent studier. If you have trouble sticking to a schedule, a more formal prep course may be a better tool for you. I raised my MCAT score by 10 points using Magoosh, KAPLAN question banks, and official MCAT study materials. Magoosh was a great supplement to my course notes for general review. My prep was also fairly inexpensive, Magoosh is affordable, and I used free trials of the Kaplan q banks. Also, check out MCAT podcasts on Spotify. This is my biggest pro tip for nailing the psych section if you don't have a strong background in the soft sciences.

    • What medical school application advice do you have for prospective students?: Allocate time for breaks from studying. Spend the majority of your prep time on questions and doing practice test sections and full-length exams, with only as much general review as you need initially. Flash cards are tempting but should really just be for initial memorization (amino acids, equations, etc.). Be patient, rely on your initial motivations to apply, and be kind to yourself! Don't apply to a million schools just because people on Reddit do. I applied to 7 and got interviews at 6, accepted in September the year prior to start. You can do this!

    After taking the MCAT the first time and not getting the score I was looking for I did some research and found this source. I bought the year subscription figuring I will either get the promised improvement of 10 point of my money back. I totally enjoyed the the daily lessons, it made it much easier to manage on top of my school work. And at the end of it, my score had improved by 10 points.

    • What medical school application advice do you have for prospective students?: Breathe, as stressful as the process is to apply it will take them months to review your application. So try not to worry if you haven't heard anything back. Most people don't hear anything until February or March.
