About Altius MCAT

Altius Prep was founded in 2005 with the mission to set a new standard of excellence within the test prep industry by providing the best resources and mentoring possible in order to help premedical students succeed on the MCAT and beyond. The Altius MCAT prep program emphasizes both the importance of close mentor relationships as well as the use of engaging and strategic teaching methods. Their on-site MCAT programs are currently available in 7 different states, and the MCAT Everywhere (Face-to-Face) program is available online in the US, Canada and Puerto Rico. The word Altius translates into “higher” in Latin, making the company’s motto fittingly standing as “Higher Scores for All”.

What’s Offered

Altius Test Prep offers a wide range of services for premed students to take advantage of, such as summer prep courses, programs, exam bundles, admissions guidance, and a blog.

Premium Mentoring Programs

There are currently four different mentoring programs that Altius offers; each program comes with a 2-week trial period, 32 Problem-Based Group Sessions and all available AAMC practice exams.

Platinum

The Platinum program is the most comprehensive and expensive mentoring program package that Altius offers, and according to their website, it is the best choice for students attempting to get extremely high scores or students looking to make significant score improvements. It comes with 45 private 1:1 tutoring sessions, 10 Altius MCAT practice tests, 200 hours of small-group instruction, and 16 Platinum-only review sessions with Altius’ best tutors. Additionally, the Platinum program features weekly Mastery Sessions and a weekly proctored “Study Hall”: the mastery sessions offer 40 hours of small-group tutoring specifically for science topics, while the Study Hall offers 40 hours of homework help, exam review, or small-group tutoring.

Gold

Similar to the Platinum program, the Gold program offers 10 Altius MCAT practice tests, 16 Study Hall sessions and 16 Mastery Sessions. This program features 25 private 1:1 tutoring sessions and a total of 16 hours of small-group instruction. This package, with its emphasis on personal mentoring, targets students who are also looking for an extremely competitive score but may not want to pay the high price of the Platinum Package.

Silver

Altius’ Silver Program features the same 16 hours of Study Hall sessions and 10 Altius practice tests as the Platinum and Gold programs, except it comes with a total of 120 hours of small-group instruction and only 15 private tutoring sessions. Altius aims this package at students who are looking for a course which will provide personal mentorship and interactive classroom learning for the same price as a “status quo lecture course”.

Summer Full-Immersion Program

Altius Prep boasts two high-value options for its Summer Full-Immersion Program, both of which are designed to provide the highest level of private instruction and guidance for students along with an extremely tailored learning experience. Both programs take place over 10 weeks and offer the option to enroll On-Site (physical location) or Face-to-Face (live HD videochat), and include a 2-week trial period, all available AAMC practice tests, 10 Altius MCAT practice tests, and 30 Problem-Based Group Sessions.

Platinum Summer vs Gold Summer

The Platinum Summer program is the most expensive (yet arguably the greatest overall value package) that Altius offers, whereas the Gold program is targeted to students looking for extensive personal instruction and mentoring at a slightly lower price. Admissions Program

Altius Prep offers Admissions Mentoring either with consultants who have either current or former first-hand experience with the medical school Admissions Committee or with medical students and doctors who have gone through top-tier programs. Altius aims to change the sphere of admissions counseling by providing personal mentoring services as opposed to general best practices that do not account for the uniqueness of each applicant. Altius currently offers four options for counseling programs, ranging in price and offerings.

Exams

Altius offers a range of expertly created full-length MCAT-2015 practice exams to provide students with exams that are the most representative of the actual exam as possible, giving them an even greater chance of success. To create its exams, Altius uses PhD Content Experts only, uses a double-blind peer review process, and takes advantage of equated score scales to make sure that no one exam is significantly more difficult than the next. Altius’ designs its tests to be as realistic as possible, therefore the exams all replicate the MCAT-2015 exam software in terms of formatting, font size, word count and figure type. Once you have taken a test and you are ready to review, you will have the option to break down your performance by topic, subtopic, or question type. You can also have your test results portrayed graphically so you can more easily visualize your progress over time. All 10 of the practice tests that Altius offers are valid for one year from the date of purchase, and there is no limit on the number of times you can attempt each one.

The final (and free!) resource that Altius Prep offers is its online blog, which posts updates on all things MCAT-related, from AAMC announcements to scholarship information to updates about the services that they offer.

    Altius mentors definitely knew what they were talking about, but in my program 15 one hour sessions with a mentor, so that wasn't very much to identify and cover all my weaknesses. The main complaint of Altius is that you basically have to teach yourself the material and hope the mentor fills in the gaps during the sessions, which isn't the best approach imo. You do have the 2.5 hour long classes, but half of that is spent actually taking the test and the other half is the mentor going over the answers, which they often ran out of time doing. I think you could save your thousands and just learn off of youtube/khan academy/etc and supplmement it with Uworld questions (highly recommend! the explanations/diagrams are worth it) and get the same, if not better results, for way cheaper.... Plus, the practice exams that Altius gives aren't the best. The B/B and C/P ones are decent, but the Reading and P/S sections aren't very accurate. The P/S on Altius has so many low yield terms on it.. I used the Mr Pankow and MilesDown decks on Anki and got a 130 on that section from that alone.

Also, starting your application early.. every school I got an interview from I had submitted my application to in June.

    As a rising junior In college i've been taking Altius practice exams for the past couple of months and can say they are very difficult. My cousin who now goes to med school says that this prepped here fantastically for med school so who am I to complain. It's a lot of effort and review after each test but compared to the prices of other prep hubs I have used this has definetly been the best value for money because they cover and go in detial about a variety of topics which you then have to study and learn more about to prep yourself for the next test

    If I am being honest, nowadays there are AFFORDABLE & RELIABLE resources much better than Altius. I wasted my hard-earned money, and as a young student supporting myself through college & helping out my hard-working middle-class family - I am disappointed in myself that I felt the need to spend thousands of dollars on this. I highly recommend looking into subscription-based MCAT prep services, which give you access to thousands of hours of MCAT tutoring, personalized practiced questions & so much more. Many of these subscription-based MCAT prep courses are around based on a monthly fee between $25-$40 (very affordable for us college students who cant drop $5K like its nothing)

    I participated in the Altius Summer Long course that began in July and ran through January, when I took my MCAT. Having taken the MCAT once before and scoring a 505, I knew I wanted a prep company to help identify my weak spots and really help me hone in on how to do well on the exam itself. The prep course was tough and long, but so is studying for the MCAT, much more so doing it by yourself. I got to meet other people virtually that were also studying for the MCAT, which definitely helped. I met with my tutor about once a week and he quizzed me on any material I was struggling with. I definitely recommend this test prep company, as I ended up getting a 517 on my January MCAT.

Have as many qualified people as possible read over your responses and, if possible, have a company also help you form a theme that is present throughout your application that you may not have even seen for yourself. It may be on the expensive side, but I attribute my two acceptances largely to a company's help with my application. I also used Altius for this.

    I participated in the Altius summer immersion course in 2016. It was mostly well-organized and staffed with enthusiastic tutors/instructors. The full-length exams were the greatest asset, and I ended up only needing to take the MCAT once. I recommend the summer immersion course. It is a whole lot of work all at once and is comparable to the pace and content volume of medical school, so essentially, if you adhere to the course schedule you will learn to take a beating, which will prepare you for medical school, on top of preparing you to take the MCAT.

On my third application, some snooty application coach, who used to sit on the ADCOM for Johns Hopkins and charges $400 for an initial consult and then multiple thousands of dollars for her full services, told me that my application was terrible and that I should take an entire year off at least and let her help me build my application up. She even said that I wouldn't be able to get in a DO school. I decided not to take her advice, and a few months later I was accepted outright by my #1 choice MD school, and I was also accepted into every DO school to which I applied. Just because someone used to work at Johns Hopkins doesn't mean they give good advice for YOU! Best of luck with applying!

    I purchased Altius materials when they were super highly discounted during the pandemic because that was the only way I really saw the prices being justified. I ended up doing about 7 practice tests from Altius which I enjoyed, especially early on in my studying, because they have built in video explanations that help engage you well. I overall like the explanations on something like UWorld better, but to start I enjoyed Altius. I didn't really end up using their book very much, but I did adopt and adapt their CARS study techniques and practiced speed and comprehension drills regularly. I ended up scoring in the 96% on CARS so I attribute most of that to my prepping and CARS exercises. One thing I must mention about Altius is their customer service was "meh"/bad. I called their support because my materials were set to expire after a year and I hadn't used them (bc of covid, I had decided to take the exam much later than originally planned). The representative proceeded to bully me about my own self-discipline skills and try to sell me on the idea that I needed to purchase one of their $3,000+ packages to keep me on track. I was so pissed, but happy to find out that my materials didn't actually expire like they thought they would.

    I have been using Altius practice tests and they have been super helpful, especially their video explanations. They also go over passages in-depth, which is really great to make sure you understood when taking it. I am glad I chose Altius for my MCAT prep, as I see my improvement with each exam I take.

    I did the whole Altius program and it was one of the biggest wastes of money. They have no material for you to study, you have to do your own research and just take tests. The tutors are often rude and tell you to review content on your own. Most of the people I met through the program did not get the amazing score that Altius claims you will get. Most people have to retake the MCAT and often study on their own and do better. The CARS section is either too easy or something that AMMC would not ask. All of the FLE scores are inflated. They have a guarantee and when you tell them you did not get the scores close to the FLE they won't contact you back. So what is the point of having a guarantee if you won't help students? Notice that there are no reviews of their products on their own website. They are just a money-grabbing corporation that is taking advance of pre-meds wanting to get into medical school. Please learn from my mistake!!!

    When I see Altius, I think "yup, 100% dependable". If you want to feel prepared for what's coming ahead, trust Altius. Prices are fair, and worth it. It's all in the way you study, but I know that YOU GOT THIS. Believe in yourself! You'll pass that test!!! PERIOD.

    It was a great MCAT Prep service. It was very accessible and worked out very well for self-paced MCAT study. Altius offered so many resources that were very comprehensive and their videos were extremely helpful in simplifying complicated topics. The practice exams were also a priceless tool during my MCAT study. Altius MCAT played an important role in helping me get the score I needed to get accepted to medical school.

    Truly the best MCAT Prep course out there. Especially as someone with a background in science education, I can attest to the fact that Altius really covers all of their bases in making sure students have every opportunity to learn the material in every method to make ideas stick. I also think that Altius' practice materials are really incredibly well made. The people who craft Altius' practice problems and exams really understand how the MCAT is written and and give the most realistic MCAT testing experience out there.

    Enjoyed this program more than Kaplan. Used this program for my second MCAT prep. I considered this program to really help me develop and execute better strategies in the MCAT, it helped that the Altius program was more student-lead and driven. However, I highly recommend that the Altius team reviews the electronic files and Altius manual for any typos and missing information. By the end of the course, due to the errors and missing information, I found myself doubting the content of the book and relied more on the content covered in the virtual meetings.

As soon as you finish submitting your AMCAS application, start working on your secondary applications and then prepping for the interviews. Getting as much of these tasks done at an early stage will really benefit you. However, also take the time to celebrate the small victories (e.g. finishing your AMCAS application, your last secondary essay, etc.).

    I used multiple programs to study for the MCAT. Altius was very similar to the questions seen in the exam, it was great review. I love the explanations, they were long but it give you what you need it to understand the topics.

    I used two of the more popular 3rd party prep companies and I liked Altius more. I got the 10 test package and enjoyed that every question comes a video explanation of how to get to the answer. This was really beneficial for me because when you’re doing that ,UCB reading, it’s nice to have video as a different method of delivery. Altius is a little bit harder than the AAMC I would say, so be aware of that but they have good material and their explanations honestly really good.

I know that sounds cliche, but I think a lot of students spend their college years ‘’checking boxes,’’ and while some of that is necessary, the activities you’re involved in should really reflect what you’re interested in. I, for example, am interested in low income healthcare, so I applied to internships in underserved areas and volunteered with vulnerable, low income populations, got formal training on what it means to listen and be empathetic, etc. Not only is it important to make sure your application reflects who you are, it’s also important that the schools you’re applying to have the same goals you do. Fit is important.

    Best practice tests out there. Most realistic and close to the actual MCAT compared to any test. I would definitely recommend to anyone wanting the best score they can get. The Chem/Phys and Bio/Biochem sections are especially realistic.

    I personally thought that Altius was the most similar to the real MCAT in terms of difficulty and types of passages. I would recommend purchasing their FLs if you are looking for some besides the AAMC ones. Some of the other third party resources are extremely difficult, and in my opinion, were not representative of the real exam.

Studying is one thing but filling out applications and writing your PS and secondaries is a whole other feat.     I really liked this program! The book was honestly amazing and really help with the MCAT. The program was pretty intense, but if you do the work it really prepares you well. All of the testing really helped me to feel comfortable going into test day. I really liked the help with the personal statement. All of their advice was so helpful.

    Altius is the company I chose to go with for my practice test initially I felt as if Altius was extremely challenging and wondered if it would truly be worth the money. however, after I took a few of the practice tests I realized that Altius was able to highlight each and every one of my weak points in order for me to improve my score I really think Altius made a difference in my learning and I credit them for my MCAT score today. I would highly recommend Altius as a practice test resource to anyone who is looking to take the MCAT. In fact, I think the first five tests are particularly representative of what is expected on the modern MCAT. A lot of other students that I have studied with also recommend Altius. I think the key here is to take it all under testing conditions and to review the exams more than once to make sure each and every weak area is improved upon. All in all, Altius is a fantastic resource and I really enjoyed using this company. I bought 10 practice tests and did the first five TWICE!

    The Altius Test Prep Course is a decent decision to make if you want to succeed in taking the MCAT. I took practice tests without any prep course or guide from Altius and I increased my score by a good number. Practice tests are incredibly important in doing well, and these tests are quite similar to the AAMC practice tests. I can only assume that having a guide that has taken and done incredibly well on the MCAT combined with the resources I had would only help more. It may be a bit pricey, but you won't be worried about price when you make it as a doctor.

    It is a very good prep course. They provide one on one help that most test prep companies do not. They have a lot of activities to do, but if you stick to it you will be able to score 90th percentile or above on the MCAT.

    Altius really went above and beyond for their students this year. After MCAT test dates were cancelled due to COVID-19 and the AAMC made changes to the test, Altius wasted no time providing extra, free and low-price resources for test-takers. They were also one of the first test prep companies to create the modified COVID-length MCAT which really helped me simulate test day. I have sampled several MCAT prep companies over the last few years, and I can thoroughly say that Altius was the most helpful and representative of test day. With the help of their group tutoring sessions and full-lengths, I was able to exceed my goal MCAT score and am now well on my way to medical school.

    The prep course is easy to follow through and gives a great insight on what to expect. The videos were a fine touch to the overall package and further stretches a helping hand along the path I just wish i had a little more material.

    As a former Altius student and mentor, I highly recommend their MCAT prep program. Each program provides the opportunity to learn at your own pace and offers access to a mentor who scored 90th percentile+ on the MCAT. In addition to Altius’ thorough content review, I enjoyed how open my mentor was answering application and interview questions. I provided the same level of care as a mentor and am confident every mentors cares to the same degree for each one of their students. Support doesn’t stop when the tutoring session is up, and that is what makes Altius exceptional.

    Altius is one of the best MCAT prep that is out there. The practice tests and questions are very similar to the actual MCAT exams and the explanations to each answer is not only concise but also easy to understand. Altius' exam platform is also very similar to the real deal for those wanting to simulate the practice tests as if they are actually taking the real MCAT. This is one of the greatest MCAT preps I would recommend to anyone!

I personally it is best to not rush applying to medical school or taking the MCAT. I have known people who have done this and this did not yield the best results. Take the exam and apply when you feel you are most competitive. People forget that the whole process of applying to medical school is expensive!

    I enjoyed using the Altius FLs. They were integral to my success on the MCAT. Of all of the 3rd party practice tests I took, I felt that Altius most closely represented the real exam. In my opinion, the FLs alone are worth the money. However, I will add that the CARS sections on their FLs were hit and miss. I feel like the Altius just misses the mark on CARS, so take your scores on that section with a grain of salt. Otherwise, purchasing Altius FLs is money well-spent.

Of course, you need to do well, but remember that there is more to your application than your MCAT score. There is a person behind the score who has a story to tell.     Altitus FLs really help you prepare better for the MCAT than a simple practice test online. The questions are super detailed and if you get something incorrect it provides extensive feedback. I found that it really pushed me in terms of test taking and was super helpful when it came to taking the actual exam. I felt more prepared and calmer than I would have without it. This is something I recommend to anyone taking the MCAT!

    I purchased the 10 test package from Altius because I realized that the AAMC materials were simply not enough to practice FLs from. I had read a ton of positive review about their tests, and I can confirm that they were all true. I think that the Altius FLs are significantly harder than the AAMC practices, but the extra intensive thought seems to prepare you better than something being too simple would. I also think that unlike other companies, the feedback you get on each question is much more understandable and complete. The review function for altius also allows you to mark each missed question with a specific reason you got it wrong, this helps you see trends that you can work on before test day!

Start the AAMC essay and application materials as soon as they open, and get your LoR taken care of before then. Have a realistic goal in mind for your MCAT score and review, review, review your practice questions.

    Altius had the best MCAT prep material by far. In my opinion, the Altius exams were significantly harder than the real MCAT and actually made the MCAT seem a lot easier in comparison. The Altius exams were research analysis heavy, which I think is one of the most crucial skills to have going in to test day. Additionally, Altius by far has the best explanations for test answers that I had seen studying for the MCAT, and I feel like I was able to actually learn and grow from the questions I missed.

    • What medical school application advice do you have for prospective students?: It is important to have extracurriculars where you are able to have a meaningful impact or grow from the experience. Having an internship/volunteer position at a prestigious hospital/lab won't do much for you unless you really get something out of it or give back. Also, MCAT and grades are important but, finding a schedule where you are able to be productive as well as enjoy life is equally important.

    Excellent. Their Practice tests are spot on and a little more difficult than the true MCAT. Using their materials put me in a great spot to get the score I was seeking. Definitely recommend their practice tests and practice questions.
